psybear---grown up

 

 

       it is my 5th Thankgivig. Time flies. 1st thanksgiving, xiao hehe, jie and me went to outlet, bestbuy etc. we got up around 5:00am in the morning. It is crazy but we really enjoyed it.   2nd thanksgiving, I forgot how to celebrate it:(. 3rd,  xifeng and i went to woodbury outlet in the midnight. Because we are too tired, we missed the next day's  Macy's parade. 4th, we finally went to see Macy's parade in NYC. So many people on the street, so many cute cartoon firgures. I took a lot of pics. 5th, stay at home and clean apt. I faced so many boxes at home, (we shipped everything from NY to here).  I finally got a time to relax , read books, watch a lot of movies. 

 

 

 

    I didn't write too much in 2008, although there are some changes in my life. I began to look for job at the beginning of year. After desperately job hunting,  I finally found a job in NYC. I really appreciate my boss. She gave the  chance to land my first job, which boosted my confidence a lot. Now I admitted that Jan and Feb were the toughest time I went through. Later in early July, I moved to Santa barbara to start my second job.  The life at work is not busy, sometimes a little bit boring, especially when I am not fully occupied during the working time. 

  

  

 

 

      We fled away from the chilly weather.

      Sunshine welcomed us in Cancun. I got tanned.

      I tried snorkeling. exicted! I saw so many beautiful fishes under sea. so close to you . I feel like I become one of them

      The colour of the sea is light bule. And I like the  white-sand beach so much!  

      I lay down in the deck chair to count the stars at night.

      I believe it is paradise.

     I went to Amy's home to carve the pumpkin. Amy has a lot of professional stuffs to carve a pumpkin, like the knife, the spoon, and a lot of designs. I chose the simple design cause it might be easy for the beginner. Her design is a little bit complicated. The pumpkin is not so firm as what I thought before. It is easy to do and we have a lot of fun!

Time flies so quickly. I didn't write anything since the semester begins. But a lot of things happened. First, about my friend. Bing got a cute little boy, HEHE will have a baby girl soon as she wishes and Shu got pregnant, too. Suddenly, my world is around with a lot of mothers and mother-to-be.  Although you don’t want to grow, time never stops. I feel more important to plan life and plan future.  

 

I will also have some changes too. I got a fortune cookie in the mid September, it was said ‘soon your life will change a lot’. I am ready to get changes. Right now, I am preparing it. 

 

 

 

 

     I have to document my boring RA work, cause it causes a lot of labors and I don't know more efficient way to do it. The task is quite simple: we are interested in the citation count of some authors in the top journals. The previous student already finished that summaries and we found the citation might not be accurate. The citation counts for one authors might also count others. for example, Rounds. J could be either Rounds JAME, OR  Rounds Jessica or whatever the fisrt name starts with J. The citation for ROunds J in our dataset include both, though we are interested in one of the two authors.  Hence, I am requested to check it again. I used SSCI database, and I also found some problems. SSCI is desinged to collect the citation and academica publication works of authors. However, it could not give the complete pubulication list for one author. Compared with CV provided by authors, I always found one or two journal publication was missing. In addtion, I also compared the results from SSCI with scholar.google.com. They two are not exactly the same. In fact, the latter did a better job to provide the pubilication list for one author,more complete than SSCI. However, since it is not a academic tool, I can't trust the citation counts provided by google.

    Finally, although I used SSCI to track the citation counts, I doubt the percent of completeness. I feel like, although I spend a lot of time doing it, the results are not statsfying.  I also thought,  why we didn't stop doing the citation work in the first time when we found that problem. it really wastes a lot of time!

  

     The other problem is : for authors, they might change from one institution (for instance, school) to others. To locate the same author, you have to find out all the institutions he/she belonged, then you will get the complete publication list. I am wondering, could the database do the updata work aumotically? In other word, the database should add a new column called'final institution'. This new variable will be automatically associated with any previous publications the author had. For users, once we input the author's name and final institution,  we can get the whole publication list.   For instance, one author published one paper A when she was in school A. Later, she moved to school B and published paper B. When I input the author name and his 'final institution', I could get both paper A and B. It will save a lot of time! 

    Howeverr, SSCI does not have such a function.  So I have to figure out all the institutions the author used to be, and I really hate those authors who moved several times.
